Story Overview

Hazel feels lonely and loses her "Happy Hum." She enters the Whispering Woods where she meets three magical creatures: a flying Cloud Sheep who teaches her that patience is strength, a clumsy Glitter Calf who teaches her to view messes as adventures, and a shy Tea Cup Dragon whom Hazel helps find confidence. Through these encounters, Hazel learns that the words she tells herself shape her feelings. Her happiness returns, and she goes back to the Big House confident and ready to share her story with the other children.

Tip, tap, tip, tap. Raindrops danced on the roof of the Big House. Inside, everything was gray and quiet.

Hazel sat by the window. She was a small girl with big eyes. She lived in the Big House with many other children, but today she felt all alone. She felt like a tiny mouse in a giant field. She touched her chest. Something was missing. Her "Happy Hum" was gone.

Usually, Hazel had a warm hum inside her heart. It went *hmmm-hmmm-hmmm*. But today, her heart was quiet. She told herself a sad story. She whispered, "I am too small. I am not brave. I am alone."

When she said those words, the gray clouds looked darker. She needed to find her Happy Hum. She put on her yellow rain boots. *Squish, squash.* She opened the heavy door. *Creak!* She stepped out into the Whispering Woods.

The woods smelled like wet pine cones. The wind tickled her nose. *Whoosh!*

"Where is my Happy Hum?" Hazel asked the tall trees.

The trees just waved their leaves. *Swish, swish.*

Hazel walked until she came to a blue meadow. Suddenly, she heard a funny sound.

*Baaaaa-zoom!*

A fluffy white sheep floated past her head! It was a Cloud Sheep. It had wool made of soft, white mist. It hovered in the air like a balloon.

"Hello!" bleated the Cloud Sheep. *Baaaaa-zoom!* It did a loop-de-loop in the air.

Hazel clapped her hands. "You can fly! I want to fly too."

Hazel jumped. *Thump.* She did not fly. She jumped again. *Thump.* She felt heavy.

"I am no good," Hazel said. "I am stuck on the ground."

The Cloud Sheep floated down. Its nose was wet and soft. "Oh, no. That is a silly story to tell yourself. You are not stuck.
