Why does Rufus’s chest feel like it holds a tiny thunderstorm every time someone needs help?
Rufus is the quietest helper at the Pinecone City Post Office, where the air smells like paper and peppermint gum. He has a secret wish tucked behind his ribs: *Let me be brave when it matters.* One stormy night, the wish answers. His skin shimmers like copper coins, and—whoosh—he becomes a dragon.
He tries not to panic. He also tries not to sneeze.
Because Rufus has a problem: when he’s nervous, he sneezes sparks. The first time, a tiny *Achoo!* pops out like a birthday candle. He clamps his snout shut and whispers, “Not now.”
Outside, a shadowy creature called the Gloom Snatcher glides along the roofs, scooping up glowing “good-night” letters from the mailbox slots.
