Story Overview

Lucia finds a blue jar on her farm containing three drawings from her Grandma. With her mother's encouragement, she interprets the drawings as acts of kindness to perform for the farm animals. First, she feeds corn to the chickens. Second, she sings a comforting song to a lonely lamb. Third, she gives a gentle hug to a tired cow. After completing the tasks, Lucia feels happy and loved. She goes through her bedtime routine and falls asleep thinking of her animal friends, feeling satisfied with her day of kindness.

Lucia stomped her feet. Stomp, stomp, stomp! She looked down at her red boots. They were shiny and bright. The green grass tickled the top of her boots. Lucia loved to play in the big garden behind her house. The sun was warm on her face. The wind blew softly. *Whoosh, whoosh.*

Lucia ran to the old oak tree. She liked to look for treasures there. Today, she saw something new. It sat on a flat stone. It was a jar. It was made of blue glass. It sparkled in the sunlight. *Twinkle, twinkle.*

Lucia picked up the jar. It felt cool and smooth. Inside, there were three folded pieces of paper. They looked like little white butterflies resting inside the glass.

"What is this?" Lucia asked.

Mommy walked over. She wiped her hands on her apron. She smiled when she saw the blue jar.

"Oh, Lucia!" Mommy said softly. "That is Grandma's jar. It is her Happy Jar. She drew pictures of happy things to do on the farm."

Lucia shook the jar. *Rattle, rattle.* "Can I do them?" she asked.

Mommy nodded. "Yes. You can be her little helper. You can make the happy things happen."

Lucia felt happy. She wanted to help. She sat down on the grass. She opened the lid. *Pop!* She reached her hand inside. Her fingers touched the paper. She pulled out the first wish.

Lucia unfolded the paper. It had a drawing on it. It was a picture of a yellow corn cob.

"The chickens!" Lucia said. "Grandma wanted to give the chickens a treat."

Lucia stood up. She marched to the barn. Left, right, left, right. She found the bag of corn.
