The smell of eucalyptus hit Winifred's nose before she even opened her eyes.
She breathed deep, filling her lungs with the sharp, minty scent. The morning sun warmed her face as she sat on the wooden porch of her grandmother's house in the Blue Mountains, watching mist curl through the valleys like silver ribbons.
"Winnie! You ready?" Her friend Kira burst through the screen door, her dark curly hair bouncing with excitement. Kira had lived in Australia her whole life, and she had promised to show Winifred everything—the secret places, the ancient stories, and the creatures that exist nowhere else on Earth.
"I was born ready," Winifred grinned, jumping to her feet.
They grabbed their backpacks and headed down the trail that wound through towering gum trees. Kira explained that these mountains weren't really blue—the color came from oil released by millions of eucalyptus trees, creating a haze that painted the air.
"My nan says these lands hold memories," Kira said quietly. "The First Nations people have lived here for thousands and thousands of years. Way longer than anyone can count."
Winifred nodded, but secretly, she thought she already knew plenty about Australia. She had read three books about it on the plane ride over. She knew about kangaroos and koalas and the famous opera house in the harbor. How much more could there possibly be?
Winifred thought reading about a place was the same as understanding it. She was about to learn otherwise.
The trail opened into a clearing, and Winifred gasped. Before them stood a massive rock formation, its surface covered in ancient paintings—ochre handprints and mysterious symbols that seemed to pulse with meaning.
"This is a sacred site," Kira whispered. "We can look, but we must never touch. These paintings tell stories from the Dreaming—the time when ancestral spirits created the world."
